Last year, in Taiwan, around 70,000 iguanas were removed, and hunters were offered rewards of up to $15 for each capture. Now, Taiwanese authorities have announced a plan aimed at sacrificing 120,000 iguanas to control their population on the island.
According to reports, the Taiwan Ministry of Agriculture has allocated around $1.2 million to carry out this iguana sacrifice plan. This measure is being implemented to protect agriculture and native wildlife, as invasive iguanas have become a threat to local crops and the island's ecosystems.
A spokesperson for the Ministry of Agriculture stated: "Iguanas have been breeding uncontrollably in recent years, damaging crops and endangering local biodiversity. Therefore, it is necessary to take drastic measures to reduce their population and minimize their impact on the environment."
It is expected that this plan to sacrifice 120,000 iguanas will attract local hunters and be carried out efficiently to control the number of these invasive species in Taiwan.
