Taiwan Receives First Batch of ATACMS Missiles

The United States has completed the delivery of the first batch of new MGM-140 ATACMS ballistic missiles to Taiwan on November 10, as part of an effort to strengthen the defense capabilities of the Taiwanese Armed Forces. Although the exact number of units provided has not been disclosed, it is known that this shipment is part of the sale approved at the end of 2020, which included 64 ATACMS missiles and 11 launchers.

Following this acquisition, Taiwan decided to acquire 18 HIMARS launchers and 20 additional ATACMS missiles, bringing the total to 29 launchers and 84 missiles respectively. The initial plan to purchase M109A6 Howitzer artillery systems was canceled. This batch is said to be integrated into the introduction of the new High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS) acquired by Taiwan.

The ATACMS missiles will be allocated to Taiwan's Army units to strengthen response capabilities against possible threats, especially from the People's Liberation Army of China. The high mobility of this type of artillery allows for rapid redistribution and deployment in different geographical areas, being essential in Taiwan's defensive strategy in the face of potential military escalations in the region.

According to Taiwan's Ministry of National Defense, the first batch of 11 HIMARS launchers has arrived in the country, confirming the inclusion of the ATACMS missiles. This equipment has been assigned to the 58th Artillery Command of the 10th Army Corps. The M142 HIMARS systems represent a significant improvement in the mobile artillery capabilities of the Taiwanese Armed Forces, thanks to their versatility and long-range firing precision.

The ATACMS missiles, developed by Lockheed Martin for the United States Army, have a range of 300 kilometers and can be launched from the M270 MLRS or M142 HIMARS systems. Each HIMARS unit can fire different types of guided munitions, giving them a wide range of capabilities on the battlefield.

Amid these advancements in defense capabilities, various military exercises have been conducted in the region, simulating large-scale encirclement operations. Taiwan seeks to maintain its readiness and deterrence against possible threats, reinforcing its strategic position in the context of regional security.
