A court in Taiwan has put an end to a nightmare experienced by dozens of residents in a neighborhood of Kaohsiung city, who were forced to endure continuous verbal abuse from their neighbor via loudspeakers for two years. The court issued a ruling against a woman named Chen, after it was proven that she had installed amplification devices on her balcony in Kaohsiung and used them to insult her neighbors at least three times a week for nearly two years. In May 2023, Chen began using a loudspeaker to direct insults and curse at neighbors with whom she had conflicts. She would broadcast curses at full volume, with each session lasting for tens of minutes. After neighbors failed to reach a solution with her, they filed a collective complaint with the local police, which eventually led the case to court. During the trial, Chen admitted to using the loudspeaker to curse at her neighbors at night. The judge ruled that her deliberate and repeated use of amplification devices to broadcast profanity late at night exceeded the limits of socially acceptable behavior. Furthermore, the loud sound from her balcony reached other houses in the neighborhood, causing widespread disturbance to the residents. The court sentenced her to three months in prison, with the possibility of converting the sentence to a fine of 90,000 new Taiwan dollars (about $3,600 US), while retaining her right to appeal the verdict.
